Messiah's Safety Plan

A NOTE FROM PASTOR AILEEN – January 11, 2021

Dear Friends,

The words from Psalm 46 have been wandering around my head and my heart these last few days. “Be still and know that I am God.” (vs. 10a).

I have, in the past, thought of them as trite; as if God is imploring us to sit on our hands and do nothing in the midst of chaos. While the world is churning, we Christians are to be passive. That is what I used to think.

Two nights ago, I spent some time with this Psalm and recognized that it begins, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

The Psalmist is not inviting us to do nothing. The Psalmist is inviting us to put our power and reaction in perspective to who we are as a people of God. The steel in our spines, the resolve to make the world a better place comes from a people who are still and know that it is God who gives us strength.

“Therefore we will not fear, thought the earth should change, thought the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; thought its waters roar and foam, thought the mountains tremble with its tumult.”

Our world is filled with fear, with disease, with discord, with violence and injustice. It is the sort of place that we are inclined to cower. Yet, this Psalm invites us to a time of prayer; a time of remembrance that God is in control and that we are invited into the work of justice and peace. We must take time to be still and recognize the power of God and then listen to God’s call to act. To do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God, as the prophet Micah writes.

What will happen in these next few weeks remains unknown. What is known to us is that, “The Lord of hosts is with us…” And we are called to work for justice, feeding the hungry, loving our neighbor, living as children of the exalted King.

Be still, my friends, and know that God is God.

Pastor Aileen
